Shop til you Drop, in your Pajamas

I don't know about you, but while the rest of the world clamors around the boisterous crowds and congested parking lots on Black Friday, I will be in my pajamas, sipping herbal tea, and buying Christmas gifts online. I prefer to loiter over all my favorite shopping sites versus waking up at 3:00 am, only to find that there are already lines formed around the block of the establishment.

For those of you brave enough to face the commotion, here are some tips from Consumerreports.org

Shop the ads before Black Friday.
In the next week or two, many of the major retailers will release (or leak) their Black Friday specials, so check one of the comprehensive Black Friday-focused websites, such as bfads.net, blackfriday.info, theblackfriday.com, and Black Friday@gottadeal.com, to see if you’re getting the best deal. Some sites allow you to filter your searches by product categories, such as TVs. Consumer Reports also compiles lists of the best deals we see, so regularly check here at our blog.

Shop online first.
Before you brave the crowds at the stores, check to see if the retailer is offering the same—or even better—deals on its website. In past years, some of the biggest retailers, including Amazon and Walmart, have offered several online sales during Black Friday week that have included many of the same items offered as part of their in-store Black Friday events—and often combined with low- or no-cost shipping deals. And some retailers will offer online exclusives you couldn’t get even by walking into one of its retail locations.

Sign up for e-mail alerts.
Many retailers now use e-mail alerts to encourage store loyalty and more frequent shopping. Sign up for alerts that will let you know about upcoming promotions and to receive exclusive coupons or discounts not readily available to everyone. Shoppers can also learn if the products they want are stocked and available, or if an item is eligible for a "buy online, pick up at store" option that can save shipping charges.

Check out QR codes.
More retailers are now using those square black-and-white Quick Response (QR) codes—which act like supercharged bar codes—in newspaper and magazine ads, on packaging, and even on websites. QR codes can be read by a cell phone equipped with a QR reader app. Often QR codes will simply provide more information about the product, including links to see videos, but they may also contain coupon codes or special deals. And this Black Friday, some stores may be targeting the most recent shopping phenomenon—"mobile" shoppers using their cell phones to research and purchase items—with special deals and offers via QR codes.

Shop close to home.
If you find the best deals are in stores, you don’t necessarily need to drive all over town to get them. With electronics, for example, our research shows that in many cases the prices for highly promoted TV sets from major electronics brands, such as Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony, vary by only a few dollars from chain to chain. So you can safely shop at the closest retailer without feeling that you’re missing out on a bargain. (Also, see our advice below on getting a price guarantee.)

Check the stores' return policies.
You may be familiar with your local chain’s return and exchange policies, but make sure that they aren’t different for a Black Friday special. Sometimes Black Friday sales are “final sales,” meaning the item can’t be returned. Other items may have a shortened return or exchange policy, or one where you can only get a store credit rather than a refund. Also, make sure there isn’t a restocking fee on a returned item.

Check the warranty
If you’re loyal to a certain brand, you may feel you’re aware of its standard product warranty. But even major brands offer special “derivative” models during promotional periods like Black Friday, and they may alter the terms of their standard warranties for these sets. For example, the term may be much shorter, or the repair provisions could be different: If a problem arises, there may be no in-home service for larger sets, or you might have to pay shipping if the TV needs to be sent to a service center. If so, make sure you’re comfortable with the terms, and find out in advance what will happen if you need the set repaired. You may find that it will be your responsibility.

See if you can get a price-match guarantee.
Often stores say they’re suspending price-match guarantees during the Black Friday weekend, but you should ask for one anyway. After all, these are supposed to be “the lowest prices of the year!”

Check specially priced “bundles”.
Often retailers—and sometimes, manufacturers—will combine two or more items into a specially priced package they say will save you money. But you should check the individual prices of these items at both the store and its competitors to see if you’re really getting a great deal. Our research during the past week uncovered some real savings, but we also found bundles that barely saved any money at all. And make sure you really need everything that’s included in the bundle. For example, we found several deals that combined an HDTV with a low-cost sound system that included a standard DVD player. With prices for Blu-ray players—and Blu-ray HTIBs— falling rapidly, this may not be as great a deal as it first seemed.

Buy the item you really want.
Items designated as "doorbusters" draw us in because of their low prices, but they may not be the best products for your needs. In electronics, for example, this is especially true of bigger-ticket items such as TVs, which you'll be living with for a number of years. Doorbuster items, particularly derivative models created specially for the event, usually have lower specs and lack features found on a manufacturer’s standard lines. While this may be fine for a second or third set, you may want better performance or more features for your main TV. Because so many shoppers are looking for the cheapest TVs, which provide little margin for the retailer, the sales staff may be more willing to cut deals on better models, where they have more wiggle room on pricing. And you may find that you’ll actually get a better deal by buying a slightly more expensive set that ultimately proves more satisfying for you and your family.

But avoid the old bait-and-switch trick.
That said, if you’re really buying only on price, stick to your guns and don’t get pushed toward a more expensive model. Retailers will sometimes advertise a great deal on a certain TV but then denigrate it once you’re in the store to buy it, hoping they can push you to a more profitable model.

Don't buy pricey accessories.
Even if you've purchased the right TV at the best price of the year, it's easy to be talked into buying pricey accessories, such as costly HDMI cables, that will negate any savings. Last year I helped a friend buy a TV during the Black Friday weekend, and it took three specific requests to get the salesman to show her moderately priced cables, which were hidden away out of sight. Even better, buy the cables ahead of time from a website such as monoprice.com or bluejeanscable.com and avoid the temptation entirely.

Pampering Yourself is Not Selfish

I love this article by the Flylady about this month's healthy habit. Take care of yourself, do what makes you feel your best, and wear those jewels, ladies. Let those sparkling faces (and sinks) shine!!

(If you don't know who she is and you are a disorganized cluttered mess, like me, you might enjoy her coaching sessions. There is no charge and her daily emails make cleaning & organizing a lot less painful!)

Dear Friends,

The Habit for this month is Pampering. The reason that we have you
work on a habit each month is to help teach you how to make something
a part of your everyday routine. Pampering is really really important
to your over all health and well being. Learning to take time out for
yourself is a huge part of FLYing. If you don't take care of you who will?

FlyLady and I can't stress enough the taking care of YOU! This begins
with getting dressed to shoes, getting enough sleep, eating well and
blessing your heart by moving each day. The Pampering Habit is
building on to those already established habits to take better care
of you. It may feel silly or extravagant to pamper yourself. Some of
you may even feel as though you don't deserve it. Some of you may feel
that it is too expensive to pamper yourself - I promise you it is not.

We are going to spend this whole month sharing different ideas and
ways to learn how to build pampering into your routine. Pampering is
not selfish, it is all a part of Finally Loving Yourself. Investing
time in who you are and the way you feel is not a waste of time,
it is an investment that will keep paying you back over and over.
Feeling good about yourself changes your mental outlook and attitude.

When you roll out of bed, throw on whatever is handy, somewhat brush
your hair, make an attempt at slapping on some lipstick and throwing
on whatever shoes you see, is not the way to start your day off
feeling as though you can conquer the world. When you lay out your
clothes the night before, have an established morning routine for
fixing your hair and make up and then pamper yourself by putting on a
favorite piece of jewelry that doesn't get worn often, a spritz of
perfume that you love, you will feel totally different when you
walk out of the bathroom stepping into a new day.

In reality not taking care of yourself is actually selfish. You are
robbing yourself of feeling good about who you are and you are robbing
your families of you being the happy and content person that you can
be. It takes BabySteps to teach you to Love Yourself but that is okay
we are striving for progress not perfection.

Pay attention to all the Pampering ideas and tips that are coming your
way and please participate. You will love how you feel about yourself!

BANNED FROM WAL-MART...

This is why women should not take men shopping against their will.

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in a nd get out. Equally unfortunately, my wife is like most women - she loved to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Wal-Mart:

Dear Mrs. Gilbert
Over the past six months, your husband has been causing quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against Mr. Gilbert are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras .

1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: Made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.

4 July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares... Get on it right away.'

5.. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&M's on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7.. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told other shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?'

9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ' Mission Impossible' theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through yelled, 'PICK ME! PICK ME!'

14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed, 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'
And last, but not least...

15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here!'

How would you feel?

It's daunting how your life can change within a matter of minutes. You can be relaxing at home, having a meal with your family, and living in the moment. Relishing in contentment, you are still smiling as you get up to answer the knock on your front door. That smile immediately diminishes upon seeing who is at your doorstep. It is the sheriffs. They are there to tell you that they are evicting you and your family from your home.

What would you do? Where would you go? Would you have family or friends to help you? Those who are not fortunate enough to have someone to turn to, end up homeless.

Andy Bales, CEO of the Los Angeles Union Rescue Mission writes, "Today, as our economy worsens, more and more professional and middle-class people are losing their jobs and homes — and joining LA's homeless population. Most are homeless for the first time and many are turning to the Union Rescue Mission for help. They are the new face of homelessness in L.A." In other words, homelessness is no longer privy to the poor and destitute.

Despite the picture of Apple Latkes recently made for my familia, I am not here to woo you with food. Instead, I am hoping to appeal to your other "senses" - your sense of compassion, kindness, and generosity. There are so many people that are depending on your generosity this Christmas. The homeless mother that looks forward to a meal to feed her children and safe place to stay for the night. The father that recently lost his job and needs just a little help to be able to support his family. The child that is abandoned and has no where else to turn.

Granted it always seems that there is barely enough to fend for our own family. But then I am reminded that compared to 3rd world/developing countries, my family has more than enough. We have a car to drive, a home to live in, food to eat, and a reliable income. We have the basic necessities that others only dream of having.

I've been neglectful

Sorry, haven't written much lately, not that I'm much of a writer to begin with, but I'm having serious writer's block. The less I write, the easier it is to let days lapse until I feel bad and force myself to write something. It's kind of like working out.

The first couple of weeks, your motivation level is at a high peak. Then, something happens or changes occur that may prevent you from exercise i.e, getting sick, family schedule, laziness, etc., so your motivation level decreases and then you stop working out as much. Until, eventually, you stop working out completely and then feel guilty about it and make another New Year's resolution to start working out again.

Well, hopefully I won't let it go that far (the blog that is), which is more than I can say for the working out part. The motivation level there is completely stagnant:) Hope your motivation level is much higher than mine!!! Have a great Tuesday!

Non-Partisan Political Humor

In light of voting day, here's a little something to make you chuckle. (Thank you MountainAsh).

While walking down the street one day a politician is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there
is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so
we're not sure what to do with you.'

'No problem, just let me in,' says the politician.

'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have
you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where
to spend eternity.'

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the politician.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down,
down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a
green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of
it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake
his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at
the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy and who has a
good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that
before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises ..

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter
is waiting for him.

'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the politician joining a group of contented souls
moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good
time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.'

The politician reflects for a minute, then answers: 'Well, I would never have
said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren
land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting
it in black bags as more trash falls from above...

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I
don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and
there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar,
drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a
wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'

The devil looks at him, smiles and says.......

Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted.

Whew - Finally Fixed

If you tried to access our site within the last two weeks, you may have noticed that pesky little Internet Explorer problem, which would not open our blog. Apparently, IE does not like all the Pacman, art, foodblog, etc. gadgets on the sidebar, so, some fall cleaning was done to extrude/expel/exterminate the problem (sorry, I'm half asleep and can't decide which adjective to use right now). Hopefully, the problem has been fixed and we can get on with our merry blogging. Have a great TGIF everyone. P.S. Thanks, again, to Cindy for letting us know about the problem. Cindy, a loyal blog follower (our only loyal blog follower) and fellow jewelry artisan, recently left us a comment, "I'm tagging you and what you need to do is list 7 things about yourself and then go tag 7 other people!! Have fun". Thanks, Cindy;) Since cyber chain mail is a lot less effort than actual tangent chain letters, and since it didn't add the customary, "something very bad will happen if you don't forward this to 100 people", and since she is kind enough to read and comment on my otherwise commentless blog, I am happy to oblige.

Anyways, here it goes:

1. I like to eat ice cream when everyone else is sleeping - that way I can take all the time I want to savor each bite (and don't have to feed anyone else).

2. I look forward to our household purchase of Girl Scout Cookies every year. (Samoas and Do-si Dos, baby)!

3. I have a spare tire that won't seem to go away. (I refuse to give up ice cream and girl scout cookies).

4. My favorite topic other than jewelry is FOOD (in case you haven't noticed).

5. I love to cook for my family (food thing again).

6. I have one husband, three kids, and one dog (the ones who consume the food).

7. I wish that I had a bigger house to invite family and friends so I could cook for & feed them more food.

I come from the old school of business ethics wherein discussion of politics is considered taboo for the workplace. And since this is my workplace (ahem), I refuse to even tread upon that topic. Sorry to disappoint you, but hot and heavy political debates is not something that I will be discussing here. My views are privately shared with my loyal, loving dog who always wags her tail in agreement to all my economic and social views. And of course my DH, but he just grunts to whatever I say (no tail wagging from him). Reprieve from Cooking - L&L Hawaiian Barbecue

I am soooo excited/giddy/stoked that the new location of L&L finally opened it doors right next door to where we live. Well, not really next door but very very close. Close enough for my eldest and I to sneak off to while hubby and the other kids were taking a nap. The anticipation of waiting over a year for the construction to be finished and then stalking it every other day to see whether they've opened is finally over. Hello Chicken Katsu, Lemon Chicken, Spam Musubi, Kahlua Pork, and Loco Moco. (Hello spare tire, that will eventually look like a regular tire around my waist, after eating here). I think that we finished our food in less than five minutes flat. No, we didn't order everything on the menu;) Our plate lunch was onolicious and well worth the wait. I guess maybe next time we should bring DH and the rest of the kids=)

From the Kitchen to the Tummy- Seared Ahi (Tuna)

Here's something I made last week. Our DSL connection was frustratingly intermittent/unreliable the past week which is why I haven't been able to post much. One of the technicians came by to determine the problem, and lo and behold, could not find anything wrong. Oh wells, at least it's working fine now.

Anyways, this Ahi was marinated in shoyu (soy sauce), salt, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar. Then seared, topped w/ toasted black sesame seeds and set upon a fried wonton wrapper. I can't remember who the recipe is from - someone on Foodtv, although I changed it a bit to save on some time. Have a good Thursday!!

The Sole Reason to Exercise

Most people exercise to lose weight, stay in shape or just to be healthy. Although, I wouldn't mind firming up the extra-midsection-postnatal-addition to my body, I really don't give a hoot about the other two reasons. (Well, maybe just a little. Although, ask me again after hitting that mid-century mark). So why exercise (I ask my imaginary surplus of faithful readers)?

How else am I going to shovel in more ice cream without having to buy bigger clothes??!!!!!!!!!

Hee hee. Who wants to buy bigger clothes when all you have to do is a little exercise? Ok, maybe a lot of exercise, depending on how much ice cream consumption your indulging upon. Besides, what other options are there? Decrease ice cream consumption? Buy bigger clothes? As much as I'd like to cut down on my portions, one or two scoops is just not enough. And as for the latter, buying more clothes will cut into the income for household food necessities - ice cream.

In conclusion, working out is not so bad, when you have a bowl of ice cream to come home to:)

My Morning Face

I have never been a morning person. Even as a child, it would take my grandmother more than several wakings during to get me up for school. By the time college came around, my "morning" classes started no earlier than 11 am. Fast forward to now, by the time morning rolls around, I have not only counted numerous sheep in my sleep, but have started to develop a sort of bond to these animals. With eyes half open, looking a bit disgruntled, this sheep happens to look a lot like I do in the morning.

As for the second picture, well, let's just say that it looks like me trying to get back into bed. Happy Tuesday everyone:)

Insomnia is Always Fun

I'm sure everyone has experienced a sleepless night or two. Here is my take on the possible causes. According to the Mayo clinic, some of the causes include the following:

* Stress - Does stressing over what you're going to eat count?
* Anxiety - I get anxious over undercooked beans and overcooked vegetables
* Depression - The thought of a messy house and piles of dirty laundry
* Stimulants - Does black mango tea count?
* Change in your environment or work schedule - Um, having kids changes lots
* Long-term use of sleep medications - Huh- insomnia with sleeping pills?????
* Medical conditions that cause pain - Does my DH's flatulence count?
* Behavioral insomnia- Why inflict more reasons not to sleep?
* Eating too much too late in the evening - Yes, this may be the culprit

And my favorite cause:
Insomnia becomes more prevalent with age- Great more reason to worry and not get sleep.

I Need Pants with Elastic Waistbands

Why does it seem that when the weekends roll around, all we do is eat. Saturday morning, everyone will wake up, eat breakfast, do errands, eat lunch, take a nap (well kids and DH), wake up, have dinner, and then repeat the same thing on Sunday. By the time Monday arrives, I am tired of eating (well, not really). Maybe I just wish that we had more neighbors that would invite us over for barbeques:)

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

We were gifted with tickets to the Dodgers vs. Brewers game this past Sunday. We all had a blast, of course, but since it's been about four years since our last baseball game, my memory conveniently blanked out on how to prepare for the joys-of-a-day-at-the-ball-park. Here are some helpful tips just in case you are going to a game in the upcoming future:

Tip #1 - Don't listen to the husband when he tells you that they will not let you into the stadium with the can of sunblock because it is a metal can.

Tip #2 - The big bag you stocked with cold water and goodies, to keep the kids from getting hungry, won't be allowed into the park unless it's less than 14 x 14 inches.

Tip #3 - Stadium seats are not insulated from the heat of the sun. Don't forget to bring towels unless you want to pay $29 for a shirt just to cover up your blistering hot seat that won't seem to cool down.

Tip #4 - Be prepared to buy a portable water fan to cool off whining oldest child.

Tip #5 - No matter how much you feed your family prior to the game, everyone will still be very hungry at the game.

Tip #6 - Whatever snacks you bring to try and save money, will be shunned for the ice cream and junk food vendors.

Tip #7 - When doing the "Wave", be wary of drunken neighbors who participate with drink in hand.

Tip #8 - Before sitting back into your seat, wipe off the spill made by drunken neighbor.

Tip #9 - Be prepared to speak very LOUDLY to the children when drunken neighbor spews off obsceneties.

Tip #10 - When husband does not return to his seat after a long time, do look for him. Chances are that he is sitting in a completely different section/row/seat not even realizing that he left you and the kids (well just one of the kids) in a completely different area.

All in all, we had a great time. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to take the kids to the game and to be able to spend time with our family.

Lemon Pound Cake...for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Tangy and Tart Lemon Pound Cake
Serves 12 skinny people or 7-8 people with healthy appetites
Prep time 15 minutes minus bathroom breaks
Bake time 1 hour and 30 minutes (it will go by very fast if you try to take a nap)

Ingredients
3 cups cake flour (I used Swans)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda (not to be substituted/mistaken with baking powder)
1/2 teaspoon salt (don't space out and think that you're salting your veggies)
1 cup/2 sticks of room temperature butter (I Can't Believe it's not Butter is not real butter)
2 cups sugar (yup the original version called for 3 cups)
5 large eggs
1/2 cup lemon juice (you might as well pucker up to your honey and kids after sucking on the lemons)
1-2 tablespoons of grated lemon peel (I love my zester)
1 cup sour cream (no light stuff - you want people to like your cake)
1 pt heavy cream - optional (not the stuff in the can that gets sprayed into everyone's mouth)

Preparation
Wash hands. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Don't stick your head in the oven waiting for it to get hot. Grease a 16 cup pan. I just used a large bundt cake pan - who wants to pour 16 cups into a pan. Lightly dust pan w/ cake flour and tap out excess flour. Throw excess flour at everyone around you. Sift flour, baking soda and salt into medium bowl.

Using electric mixer, beat butter in a large bowl at medium speed until fluffy. Try not to mix your fingers off while you sneak a taste. Gradually add sugar and beat 5 minutes. Hop on each leg to delay that bathroom call. Add eggs one at a time, beating just until combined after each addition. Don't watch your favorite tv program or else you'll overbeat. Beat in lemon juice and peel.

Using rubber spatula, mix in dry ingredients. Scoop some sour cream into your mouth, I mean, mix/fold in sour cream. Wipe your fingers of any excess sour cream (even though you'd like to lick them clean). Transfer batter to prepared cake pan. Unless you want salmonella from the raw eggs, don't lick the bowl.

Bake cake until tester (some skinny utensil or toothpick) inserted near center comes out clean, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Let cake cool in pan on rack 15 minutes. Hover around the cake and tell everyone that it's not ready yet. Cut around cake in pan.
Don't let the crumbs go to waste.

Carefully turn cake right side up on rack and cool completely. Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form. Dollop a very large spoonful of whipped cream on each piece of cake. Better yet, add a small piece of cake to a whooping dollop of cream. Eat to your heart's content and maybe save a few pieces for the rest of your family:) Hope you enjoy our recipe!

In the very early eighties, my friends and I were the "hippest" little Catholic school girls around. We would walk around the neighborhood donning our plaid green skirt and white top uniform, carrying this beastly large boombox (after school of course;). Our preferred musical choice included bands such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Journey, Journey, and more Journey.

Those who cared to hear our music and those who did not care to hear it, were subjected to the very loud sounds that projected from our portable radio. Our boombox was non-exclusive and non-discriminatory, it included everyone within hearing distance. So, there we were proudly blasting away "Faithfully", "Anyway you want it", "Wheel in the Sky" to all that passed by us, on foot and vehicle. Three preteen girls determined to convince the people in the neighborhood (and the world) that their lives were incomplete and meaningless unless they have heard the music of Journey.

25 years later, unless it's Miley Cyrus, the Cheetah girls or anything tweenish, I rarely even get to listen to music these days. If it weren't for all the news buzz about Journey's reformation and the new lead singer, I wouldn't even think twice about my old favorite.

Being very skeptical about Steve Perry's replacement, (after all he was one of my first crooners) I had to look into the matter myself. After watching the YouTube CBS interview with Journey and the new lead singer, Arnel Pineda, I am happy to report that I have rediscovered one of my old loves (don't tell hubby). Here is the CBS interview, but be forewarned, it might bring tears to your eyes. Arnel's story is very inspirational and heartwarming and in my humble opinion, he is a wonderful addition to Journey. What do you think?

Single Women Wanted

I really really wanted to post some embarrassing pics of my DH but I just didn't have the heart to do it. Rather, I didn't want any retaliatory pictures of me;) So, instead, here are some pics of my brother-in-laws. Single and looking for a mate. Well, except for the one in the yellow trunks, he just started dating someone after a long hiatus. A really long seven or eight year hiatus. Needless to say, we were all happy (relieved) when he finally brought someone home.

So the other one, with the closeup picture, is the single one. He's a stand-up comic and not just amongst family members;) "E-man the Pool Man" (his other profession) performs at the Icehouse , Comedy Store , and all those other places that comedians go to tell their stories.

I wonder if his monologue includes any of his early twenty-year-old antics. There were quite few since he was always a funny guy, but there is one in particular that always made his brother (my DH) chuckle. Let's just say that it wasn't the cat who was intoxicated, urinating on the bed in middle of the night, with a loaf of bread in his mouth. Oh boy, I'm really fearing retaliation now. Anyways, maybe tomorrow I'll post some non-embarrassing pics or at least not too embarrassing of DH:) Have a great TGIF everyone!

Painful dinner decisions are always magnified when I wait until the last minute to figure out what to cook. So, whenever I'm running late on the dinner preparation (it's a wonder that we don't have pasta more often), pasta meals always seem to be the easy answer. Plus, when you have little people hovering around asking for food (even though they just consumed a miniature meal not so long ago) it's a good way to get them involved in the cooking process while keeping them occupied. I'm thinking/hoping that they'll be cooking for me & dh in a couple of years. Anyways, here is the rundown of a quickie meal in which nothing needs to be thawed, and your favorite veggies can be easily incorporated into the same dish.

~Your choice of pasta (we usually do penne or bowties but egg noodles was all we had)
~Sun dried julienned tomatoes in olive oil
~cooking sherry
~garlic
~more garlic
~real butter
~heavy cream
~diced or sliced veggies (we used mushrooms, zucchini, and yellow squash)
~extra for hubby's lunch

Saute and toss everything together and you have dinner for a large family of 8 or in our case, a family who eats like a family of 8. The only downside of eating this meal is the cleaning up. Now if only I can get the kiddies to do that.

Nothing Like Mom's

Why is it that whenever you attempt to cook something made by your mom or dad, it NEVER tastes the same. You can use the exact ingredients, methods, and directions but for some reason, it just doesn't compare to their cooking.

There are some dishes of my parents' that I wouldn't even bother to attempt due to this realization. For instance, I have never tried to make pancit or chicken relleno. And I would definitely, not even bother to try and replicate their recipe for ribs. So, whenever we visit my parents, they always make lots of extra ribs just so we can have some to take home. With that being said, this delicious picture is my parent's ribs, my rice and broccoli (that I can make;), with homemade ranch dressing by the Pioneer Woman . Needless to say, it was just a "little" tasty. Thanks mom and dad!

Hula Panic

One of the biggest fears in hula, other than performing the festivals/competitions, is getting up to the stage to realize that all your hula implements are missing. Well, luckily that didn't happen, but for some reason Milani's implements were no where to be found. For the past month, we searched high and low for the missing uli uli (feathered rattle), pu'ili (bamboo sticks), and ipu (hand held gourd). Strangely, the bag that held all of the stuff was home but everything else was gone. Milani and her dad aka dear husband looked in the car, the garage, the closets and the rooms but to no avail.

It just didn't make sense that the bag was at home but everything else was missing. First off, the hula gear is always in the car. Its permanent spot is in the car just because we can't forget it for hula practice. (Instilled by our previous hula teacher who used to charge money whenever the hula book and implements were forgotten). Secondly, the only time it is ever removed out of the car is if we go away to my parents place or on a long trip somewhere. Of course my mom did not find it anywhere in her house. Thirdly, the last people to see it was Milani and her dad. Thus, it must be dear husband who lost it lol.

Fortunately, his wife remembered that he and the kids went with his parents on a cherry picking excursion, hence, suggested that it might be at his parents. In conclusion, DH has a bad memory but happily, all the items were there. And yes, his wife is taking credit for finding it;)

Happy Anniversary Honey

I want to wish a very Happy Anniversary to my dear husband! Even though the day was actually five days (lol), at least I remembered before you did (this year). As strange as it sounds, hubby and I have been married for 11 years and for the last five or so years we seem to forget our anniversary date. It's not that we forget completely. We always acknowledge it when July rolls around but then for some reason, when the actual day appears, it just rolls right by us. Sometimes it'll be weeks until the light goes on and one of us will say to the other, "Hey, you forgot didn't you?" At least this year, we were only off by a couple of days (smiles).

As DH says, it just goes to show that what happens in our daily life is what really matters. In the big realm of things, there is so much more to think about than dates to remember or dates missed, as in our case. Simply stated, it's enough that the Lord has blessed us with one other and our children. Sorry, if I'm getting a little sappy on you but it's just the way I feel.

Anyways, I'll have to think of something really special to cook for him and the kiddos, so if you have any ideas, feel free to let me know. It's the least I can do for putting up with him, er I mean me, for the past years. I wish that I could post some wedding pics here but they didn't even have digital cameras / video cameras then. (Strange to think that they've only been accessible for less than a decade). Everything is still in a photo album:(.

Another website recently discovered is http://prizey.blogspot.com. And this one is a little dangerous, not as in bodily harm dangerous, but as in addictive dangerous. There are so many giveaways that before you know it, you're trying to enter all the contests. All you do is leave a comment on the blogger's page and you're entered to win the prize. It's fun trying to win the plethora and I mean plethora of freebies ranging from baby strollers to Wii.

From what it looks like, companies are sending their items to bloggers in exchange for advertising. It seems legit enough and all the bloggers giving away the prizes seem to be stay home moms. Their banner claims that they are 100% spam and linkbait free. Although we haven't won anything yet, maybe we'll be the lucky recipients of the Ben & Jerry's Icecream giveaway:)

Some time ago, I came across Yelp, a site dedicated to reviews about restaurants, shops, beauty and spas, and nightlife. What's nice about it is that there are reviews in your local area and throughout the USA. Anyone can leave feedback about his or her experience with an establishment. You can also read the reviews prior to going wherever you are planning in order to find out what others think or whether it's worth the trip. I enjoy reading some of the restaurant reviews and there are some people who seem to dine out everyday. They must not have kids -lol.

Anyways, if you're really bored here are some of our reviews. There aren't very many as we do most of our fine dining at home (smirk). Also, three loud children, well mostly two, are better enjoyed at home;)

Post Baby Boomers

Interesting baby news lately (no not me - three is enough thank you), US birth rates are the highest since the early 1960's (baby boomer era), an average of 2.1 per woman. The economic impact of this is highly desirable in industrialized countries because "it means a country is producing enough young people to replace and support aging workers." (Stein, Washington Post 2007). With the boomer generation retiring, there is and will continue to be the need to fill their positions.

"This is a noteworthy event," said John Bongaarts of the Population Council, a New York-based think tank. "This is a sign of demographic health. Many countries would like to be at this level." (Stein, Washington Post 2007).

So what does that mean for us? Well, hopefully, it will keep us busy with our Grandma and Mommy Jewelry:)

We are glad to finally have new jewelry to share. With all the personal b-days and new babies, we haven't been able to make anything to sell. So here it is, something for the baby boomers and something for Gen X and Y.

Description for the earrings on the left:
A splendor of subdued colors in icy pink and light mocha encompass these asymmetrical earrings. Each pin was torched, pickled, and securely wrapped around each beaded component. Sterling silver chain was then attached to connect each component. Wire was hand forged into a circle bezel to provide somewhat of a frame for the glass lampwork. Lastly, the earrings were given a vintage patina and polished to bring out the details.

Comprised of lampwork artisan glass beads, sterling silver 925, Swarovski crystals. Since they are asymmetrical in appearance and length, the measurement for one is 4 inches and 3.5 inches for the other. All metal is solid sterling silver 925.

Description for earrings on the right:
Luxurious, rich purple amethyst dangles from our hand forged design. These earrings have been given a deep patina and then buffed for a nice sheen.

These post-back earrings are comprised of sterling silver 925 and faceted round amethyst semiprecious gemstone. They measure slightly over 1.5 inches.

Ahh, Friday, for those of you lucky ones that are going away this weekend, where are you going and do you need a traveling companion? ~chuckle~ I found this article by the NY Times on the 53 Places to Go in 2008. Interesting places, such as Laos, being the number one destination. I'd never think of Laos as a vacation spot much less a popular destination. I'll have to ask my Lao friends about that one. Anyways, the article is definitely a guide for the baby boomers.

For the rest of us not so fortunate, we'll be at home tinkering w/ jewelry. Which is not so bad, I guess;) Here's a little something that we custom created for a dear lampworker friend. The necklace is comprised of glass artisan beads, sterling silver, black onyx, and a nice big lobster clasp. Hope our work does her beads justice.

Back from Vegas

Sorry to disappoint all you hotshot gamblers, but we didn't hit the jackpot. In fact, we didn't even go to any of the casinos much less hit any slot machines or poker tables. We were there to visit family. I know it sounds strange to go to Vegas and not do any gambling but Hubby and I just don't have the desire. We did get to play on my brother's Wii (exciting aren't we?). That's probably why we all have sore forearms and shoulders today. Of course, Milani got the highest score on everything - she scored 178 in bowling. Anywayz, hope you all had a nice 4th of July.

Makana (gift) for the Halau (school)

Been working on a few things, one of which was a donation to the raffle for our ho'ike. Here is a pic and description: Sculptural glass flowers in the most delicate colors of rose pink, marigold yellow, and white coconut, adorn this lovely necklace. La'i Leis and Hula Dog

Here are some pics of the finished la'i leis. They took 5 days to make- jk- they took a couple of days to cut the leaves and weave them into wrists, ankles, and head pieces. I probably should have taken pics of the actual process but we were too busy to think of it.

The ho'ike (hula recital) turned out really beautiful event and it was heart warming to see all the hard work of our kumu hula, children, and everyone else displayed on stage. Now, we can catch up on sleep:).

Only a few more days til our ho'ike. We are busy making ti leaf leis and will try to post a picture of how it is made. There are five pieces - one for the head, wrists, and ankles. It's a lot of work but I can't complain as we only have one set to make. There are a few families that have 3-4 children so 5 pieces versus 20 pieces is little in comparison.

Weekend Musings

So we went to our local arts and crafts festival this weekend and of course there were all sorts of interesting things to see. After walking around some, there were a few booths that caught my eye (other than the jewelry booths:) - the bath and body products. Due to our little ones skin problems, we have recently started buying gentler, alcohol & paraben free, homemade soaps for their skin. It has evolved into other kinds of buying: homemade lip balms, deodorant, shampoo, etc. Anyways, we were glee with excitement (ok maybe just me) when we spotted three bath & beauty booths. Alas, we didn't end up buying anything from them. I'm afraid that the soap sellers on etsy have spoiled us with all their delicious fragrances and ingredients.

Vacation is Almost Here

Hula Ho'ike

So my daughter, Milani, is going to have a hula ho'ike (recital) and we haven't even started selling tickets yet- yikes. It should be fun w/ lots of onolicious food, dance, and music by Tropical Heat. The nice part is that the location is in Alhambra, so at least it's kinda in between for those living in Orange County and Los Angeles. It's on Saturday, June 28, so if you'd like to enjoy some grindz, entertainments, and a good time w/ friends and family, be sure to hit me up for tickets:) The name of the halau (hula school) is Halau Hula Moani'a'ala Anuhea under the Kumu Hula Nani Aiu-Quezada. I was thinking of doing a PIF (pay it forward -an act of kindness to some stranger, who, in turn, reciprocates with another stranger) but giving jewelry away is not really a random act but something more intentional. A random act IMHO is more like opening the door for someone or picking up something that someone dropped. And also, I believe that a gift should not have any attachments as with a PIF. Filipinos and the Black Eyed Peas

I am afraid that I am a bad blogger. It has been awhile hasn't it?!! I never know quite what to say and so procrastination seems to get the best of me. We recently purchased some really nice smoky quartz and agate gemstones that are going to be utilized in some of our jewelry designs. The new pics are a couple of examples of what we've done so far. They're not very springish but some people don't like pinks and pastels so we always try to make things that all our customers would like. Or that we think they would like. Anyways, stay tuned for more goodies and feel free to leave a comment on what you would like to see. We love custom requests:)

In the meantime, here is a funny video by the Black Eyed Peas. It's not something that you would see on MTV as it is sung in Tagalog, one of the member's native tongue. Granted it has been out for a while, but since I am over the hill and out of the loop, I just recently saw this. My brother has it on his myspace and when I first saw it, I could not stop cracking up. If you know or have any Filipino members in your family, you will definitely relate to the beginning.

Dog and family

Oops sorry for the long absence. It's the weather, the weather I tell you:) It has been beautiful here in So Cal the past week. So, we (dog included) have taken some nice long strolls around the park. She (dog) really enjoys a family outing and sometimes she's even better behaved than the kids :)

There is some strange flu bug that's circling our family. And I am such a neuro about washing our hands. Oh well, hopefully, it will go away soon. Consequently, not too many new pieces from me. Here are two just in case your interested.

These late night posts are starting to affect me. There are dark circles under my eyes, sluggishness during the day, and lovehandles around the waist. Oh, wait a minute, that's from the girl scout cookies:) Alas, nothing that a little/ a lot of coffee and makeup won't fix. At least there is only one more day til Friday. It is a very special time of year for us -Girl Scout Cookies are here:). We have been very good so far- and have only purchased 2 boxes of Samoas and 1 box of Do-si-dos. Unfortunately, that was all the cash we had on hand. Alas, on the ride home (from purchasing them) one box was already gone and the rest were consumed by the next day. Those kids of mine:) I... must ...have ...must... have... more... cooooookies!!!!!! They are so addicting to us that in previous years, we have been known to consume around 15 boxes. Poor hubby, he probably gets to eat one box to himself:)

Desserts to die for

It was my two year old's b-day a few days ago and we went to Red Ribbon, this delish Filipino bakery. We usually have the (to die for) Mango Cheesecake but this time the kids wanted Chocolate Mousse. I wonder if their employees get to eat cake everyday. Maybe I should get a part time job there:)

How was your weekend? We had a very mellow, relaxing weekend. Hula for Milani, errands, church, and that's about it. Sorry, I have no new pics to post as it rained all weekend here in "sunny" California. I do have an oldie but goodie local joke for you.

Who wants chocolate?

For the past month, I've been snacking on the most delectable truffle chocolates. It reminds me of my first (and last) taste of exquisite, luxurious, and expensive Champagne Truffles. It's become an almost nightly ritual that I look forward to. The dishes are done, the kids and hubby are asleep, and then I get to have my after-dinner/late-night snack. Each morsel is savored until the last piece has melted into my endorphins:) It definitely satisfies my chocolate cravings. Alas, today, I look into the fridge and the last of my latenight endorphin jolt is no more:( Sigh... LOL

By the way, we gave the bracelet a name - "Strawberries in my Garden" and it's up on our website in case your interested. It's not chocolate but it's still sweet;)
